The East Grand Rapids Hearts of Gold Foundation has chosen the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan as its 2019 focus nonprofit organization.

Hearts of Gold is an annual, community-based charitable awareness and fundraising campaign based in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. Since 2009, Hearts of Gold has raised $663,000 for non-profit organizations throughout the state.

In 2018, Children’s Advocacy Center of Kent County was presented with a Hearts of Gold donation of $82,000. Awareness activities and fundraising will kick off in September and culminate with a ceremony October 18th at the East Grand Rapids High School home varsity football game.

"The Hearts of Gold Committee chose to partner with the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan based on the many services they offer children with epilepsy in Michigan – such as free camps – and other services focused on community education, legislative advocacy and social opportunities,” said Beth Hoekstra, Hearts of Gold co-chair.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan leads the fight to find a cure and provide services and support to the 100,0000 people living with epilepsy in Michigan. It is the only statewide nonprofit organization focused on epilepsy.

More people live with epilepsy than with Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy combined and 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. Epilepsy is also highly stigmatized. It receives less funding for research and has significantly less awareness than other conditions.

“We are truly honored to partner with East Grand Rapids Hearts of Gold. The awareness the campaign will bring to our community will be immeasurable,” said Brianna Romines, President of the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan. “The funding from Hearts of Gold also will allow us to do more of everything for the Michigan epilepsy community, especially when considering our programs are available at little to no cost.”

From September through Oct. 18, students, parents and local businesses will host various Hearts of Gold activities to promote epilepsy awareness and raise funds to benefit the epilepsy community in Kent county and beyond.
